Electrician in Lake Placid, FL

Lee’s Electric is a family-owned electrical contractor that has worked in Central Florida since 1972. Our office is in Sebring, and Lake Placid is a straight run south on US-27, usually about 25 to 35 minutes away. We handle repairs, new circuits, panel work, generator hookups and commercial service for homes and businesses across the town and the lakes around it.

Lake Placid has a mix you don’t see in many small towns: older block homes near Main Street and Interlake Boulevard, lakefront houses on Lake June-in-Winter, Lake Placid and Lake Clay, manufactured homes in the 55+ parks, the Placid Lakes neighborhoods to the west, and caladium fields and citrus groves along the muck soils near Lake Istokpoga. Each of those comes with its own electrical problems, so this page walks through what we see most often here and how we approach it.

Older Homes Near Downtown Lake Placid

The town was chartered in 1925 and renamed Lake Placid in 1927, and plenty of the homes around the historic downtown and the mural district were built long before today’s appliance loads. Common findings in these houses include fuse boxes or early breaker panels, two-prong outlets with no ground, undersized service for central air, and circuits that have been extended again and again by past owners. Warning signs are easy to miss: lights that dim when the AC starts, breakers that trip when two appliances run together, warm outlet covers, or a burning smell near the panel.

We start by finding the cause instead of swapping parts. Sometimes that’s a loose neutral or a failed breaker that our electrical repair team can fix in one visit. When the panel itself is the problem, our panel repair and upgrade service covers replacing worn-out equipment and sizing a new panel for the loads you actually run.

Lakefront Homes, Docks and Boat Lifts

With so many homes on Lake June-in-Winter, Lake Placid, Lake Clay and the smaller lakes around town, a lot of our calls here involve water. Dock lights, boat-lift motors, pool equipment and outdoor outlets all live in wet locations where corrosion, sun damage and lightning take a toll. These circuits need GFCI protection, wiring and boxes rated for wet locations, and connections that hold up to Florida humidity.

If a boat lift stops halfway, a dock outlet keeps tripping, or a lightning storm knocks out lakeside lighting, we’ll trace the fault from the panel to the end of the dock. For new dock power or a new lift, we run a dedicated circuit sized for the motor and the distance, which matters on long runs from the house down to the shoreline.

Storm Season and Generator Hookups

Highlands County sits well inland, but hurricanes still reach it, and outages after a major storm can last for days in the rural parts of the county. Many Lake Placid homeowners keep a portable generator, and the safe way to use one is through a properly installed inlet and an interlock or transfer switch. Running extension cords through a window is a hassle, and backfeeding a dryer outlet is dangerous for you and for line crews working on the grid.

Through our electrical installation service, we wire generator inlets, interlock kits and transfer switches, add whole-home surge protection, and install EV chargers and new circuits for workshops and garages. Before storm season is a good time to schedule this work, while there’s room on the calendar.

Duke Energy or Glades Electric: Know Your Utility

Lake Placid is split between two power providers. Depending on the address, electricity comes from Duke Energy Florida or from Glades Electric Cooperative, the rural co-op that keeps an office in Lake Placid on SR 70. The name on your monthly bill tells you which one serves your home.

It matters for some jobs. A service upgrade or meter-base replacement needs the utility to disconnect and reconnect power, and solar systems need the utility’s interconnection approval before they go live. We’ll tell you which steps are ours and which are the utility’s, so you aren’t caught waiting. Homeowners who are thinking about solar can start with our solar panel wiring and installation page.

Permits Inside Town Limits

Inside the Town of Lake Placid, permitting is a two-step process. According to the town’s permit procedures, the town’s staff handles zoning approval for projects that need it, and the Highlands County Building Department issues the building permit and inspects the work for Florida Building Code compliance. Outside town limits, in areas like Placid Lakes, the county handles it directly. When a job needs a permit, we pull it and schedule the inspections, and we’ll tell you up front when one is required.

Groves, Farms and Local Businesses

Lake Placid calls itself the Caladium Capital of the World, and the fields and groves around Lake Istokpoga depend on well pumps, irrigation controls, barns and outbuildings that are often a long way from the main panel. We run feeders and subpanels to shops and barns, repair pump circuits, and fix lighting on equipment buildings.

In town, the shops, restaurants and offices along US-27 and Main Street need dependable lighting, dedicated equipment circuits and repairs done with minimal downtime. Our commercial electrician services cover tenant improvements, lighting retrofits, signage power and troubleshooting for small businesses.

What Customers Say

“Lee's Electric wired my boat dock for a lift and also installed a water filtration system & watersoftner for my well water. They were very profesional, punctual and did an excellent job.”

— Terry Grigg, Google review

“I contacted 4 different company’s to put me in a plug so I could run my generator when we lose electricity. Came out, quoted the job. Showed up when he said he would. Once he started he had to do it differently than what we had talked about. He ran the circuit and even though it was more work, he didn’t change his price. Very honest person.”

— Mark Sorrell, Google review

Lake Placid Electrical FAQs

Do you serve Placid Lakes and the homes around Lake June-in-Winter?

Yes. We work throughout the Lake Placid area, including Placid Lakes, the neighborhoods around Lake June-in-Winter and Lake Clay, the downtown historic district and the rural properties along the roads toward Lake Istokpoga. Most of these are within roughly 25 to 40 minutes of our Sebring office.

Who supplies electricity in Lake Placid, Duke Energy or Glades Electric?

Both serve parts of the area. Some Lake Placid addresses are on Duke Energy Florida and others on Glades Electric Cooperative. Check the name on your bill. It matters for service upgrades, meter work and solar, because the utility has to handle the disconnect, reconnect or interconnection.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in the Town of Lake Placid?

Many jobs do, such as panel replacements, service upgrades, new circuits for large equipment and generator transfer switches. Inside town limits, the town reviews zoning where it applies and the Highlands County Building Department issues the permit and inspects the work. We’ll tell you if your job needs one and handle the paperwork.

Can you install a generator hookup for my Lake Placid home before hurricane season?

Yes. We install generator inlets with an interlock kit or a transfer switch so a portable generator can safely power the circuits you choose. This keeps power from backfeeding into the utility lines. Booking before storm season is the easiest way to get it done on your schedule.

Can you add or repair power on my dock or boat lift?

Yes. We add dedicated circuits for boat lifts, dock lighting and outdoor receptacles with GFCI protection and wet-location rated parts, and we troubleshoot lifts or dock outlets that trip or stop working. Long runs from the house to the shoreline need wire sized for the distance, so we plan for that up front.

My older Lake Placid home still has a fuse box. Should I replace it?

A fuse box isn’t automatically unsafe, but many weren’t sized for central air, modern kitchens and today’s electronics, and some insurers ask about them. We’ll inspect it, check the wiring it feeds and explain whether a repair or a full panel replacement makes sense for your home.

Do you handle electrical emergencies in Lake Placid after hours?

Yes, we offer emergency electrical service. If you have sparking, a burning smell, a panel that’s hot to the touch or partial power in the house, turn off the affected breaker if you can safely reach it, stay clear of the equipment and call us. If you see downed lines, call your utility first.

Can you run power to a barn, workshop or well pump on rural property?

Yes. We install feeders and subpanels for barns, shops and outbuildings, repair well pump and irrigation circuits, and add lighting and outlets to equipment buildings. We’ll look at the distance and the loads first so the new circuits are sized correctly.
